Posted: November 30th, 2009 | Author: graggregator | Filed under: Graf | No Comments »Remember when it was just 12 days of xmas putting on a show for christmas? Things have come a long way in the last couple of years, here’s a couple more shows coming up, in addition to the Inkie and Weapon of Choice shows blogged last week.
First up, the ever reliable Art-El crew along with some fine art bods, doing something a bit further away from the grafstreeturban side of things than usual, but a big line up and an interesting new venue should make this one worth wandering along to this Friday night.
Picton Mews is off Picton Street down towards the Thali/Bells Diner part of it, where this used to be if memory serves.
Here’s the chat…
Art-el & Tunnadine Fine Art present ‘Advent’
Advent aims to provide a visual seasonal treat and bring an end to the period of expectant waiting, brightening up the festive season with a unique exhibition of new ideas and visual delights.
This show will bring you work from a wave of the galleries newer artists who present an aesthetic of visually challenging work, ranging from classic figurative portraiture to the grimy and still developing genre of the street. Although this show will be far removed from the usual urban/street art crew they are both primarily associated.
Selected from each gallery is a mix of local, international and national artists from as far afield as the USA, Portugal and Swansea!
High Renaissance, Fran, ill joseph, Joshua Barber, Leanne Ellis, Motorboy, Pedro Matos, Ria Hill, Simon Riley and Tom Hine.
The period of expectant waiting and preparation will cease and commence simultaneously at 7 p.m. on Friday 4th December at the newly discovered and delightful ‘2° Degrees Gallery’, a new creative space situated in Montpelier, in the heart of Bristol’s creative quarter.2 Degrees Gallery, 2 Picton Mews (right off of Picton Street), Montpelier BS6 5PB
Preview will be on Friday 4th December 6.30pm until 10pm.
Then open from the 5th to the 20th December
(Wed to Sun 11am until 7pm)
The day before, this Thursday, there’s a shorter show opening down at Hamilton House on Stokes Croft, from 1LoveArt. On from Thursday 3rd to Monday 7th December, the whole thing then moves down to The Lanes down by Bridewell from the 12th December to the 12th Jaunary. Definitely ‘Urban’ art this one, if that’s your kind of thing, although there are a few writers in there amongst the stencils.
Petro Show Video
Posted: November 30th, 2009 | Author: graggregator | Filed under: Graf | No Comments »Going to back date the photos from the Petro show at some point, so they’re on here as a record.
If you want a potted view of the whole show though, printing for it and painting at both Friend and Co Galleries, then check out this video, kindly sent over by Mr 45RPM.
Explains what all the shoe polish was about too…
Wild Dayz Book By Beezer
Posted: November 30th, 2009 | Author: graggregator | Filed under: Graf | No Comments »More on this soon, but just a quick heads up. Just in case there’s not already enough going on on the 11th December, there’s a launch of a new book at the City Museum up by the Triangle.
It’s by Beezer, who was around the Bristol scene in the 1980’s, and had the good sense to take photos of everything whilst he was at it. Saw an annotated copy of the book a few weeks back, and it really is well done, tons of photos from around Bristol, Wild Bunch parties, St Pauls Carnival and even Glastonbury Festival.
The launch at the museum should be interesting, there’s a book signing, a showing of a specially commissioned film about the scene by Steve Haley. Looks like the museum’s started spending the money it said it was going to on ‘graffiti art’ a short while back, as two big new commissioned works by Inkie and Ian Dark are going to be on display too.
Being the museum, it’s an RSVP sort of affair, so email linda.bryant AT bristol.gov.uk by Wednesday the 9th to go along.

The Mojo of Rojo
Posted: November 30th, 2009 | Author: graggregator | Filed under: Graf | No Comments »I only stumbled across ROJO the other day, they're a rather impressive creative collective, based mainly in Brazil and Spain, and they've got quite a handful of talented artists under their belt, some of which you might not have heard of before. If you like any of the following I'm sure you can snap something up by them at the ROJO Art Store. I seemed to have leaned towards the illustrators for the main part, but it's still a rather eclectic selection all the same, including works by Bruno 9li, James Roper, Justine Ashbee. Leah Tinari, Mulheres Barbadas and Talita Hoffmann. ROJO have a true eye for spotting the exceptional, they scour the world looking for the best of the best, you should really check out their projects page if you get the chance, some superb in-situe works displayed in top notch photography.
Bruno 9li, born in 1980 in Porto Alegre in Brazil, he exhibits in Spain and South America for the main part, and his works span various creative styles and cultures. There are definitely some hints of Japanese and Mayan art in many of his pieces. There's plenty of organic iconography on offer, as well as a generous smattering of the mystical, his choice of colours and outlined imagery hark back to something almost psychedelic. Do check out his mad site at www.bruno9li.com if you fancy a quick trip
This is probably my favourite piece of Bruno's at ROJO. If you're inclined to buy this piece it comes with a whopping great price tag of €4350, so I guess you'll need to raid a rather large piggy bank if you have one spare. As it happens most of his works have been sold although there are a few left in his 'Sigma Series'.
James Roper born 1982 in Knutsford, England. This guy is truly a fascinating chap, he's currently working on a series that appropriates soft porn imagery and portrays it as a device for spiritual emanation. Here's his explanation 'The inspiration for this series of works originated from my interest in Bernini's sculpture The Ecstasy of St.Teresa and how Bernini visualised religious ecstasy in an abstract form and inadvertently drew comparisons to psycho-sexual release.' He's a painter, illustrator, sculptor, film maker and all-round modern Rennaissance Man. This piece is entitled 'The Ecstasy of Amy Reid' and is sold, though plenty of others are still available in the Ecstacy Series. He's used the bodies of glamour models and porn stars to represent a wide and highly interpretative range of heightened religious emotional states.
Justine Ashbee was born in 1979 in Nottingham UK. Her work emanates a ream of perfect symmetry, every piece both intuitive and abstract is drawn free hand, and for me resonates with something near spiritual, her process could almost compared to a visually heightened parallel to the phenomenon of Automatic Writing. She describes it herself as 'Zen Calligraphy', you can almost hear the rhythm of her art.

Leah Tinari born in 1975 – New York City – USA is a highly accomplished painter. With a sprinkling of street and pop art in her style, he everyday subjects and quirky compositions are sourced from personal photographs of friends and strangers. She herself admits that many would normally be rejected by other photographers, in essence it is the imperfection of the 'real world' as opposed to the heightened reality of the Media that spurs much of her fascination with the more exuberant side to life. This is 'Compare Hair Portrait' (2007) – acrylic on canvas – 100cm x 100cm. Price: €4000.
Right now Mulheres Barbadas is drawing 'live' at Micasa in São Paulo, Brazil for 5 days so do check out the videos at his site to see him in action, where he's in the midst of filling up as many gallery walls as possible with his cornucopian illustrations. Born in 1982 São Paulo, Brazil, Barbadas is well known for his giant drawings, each more complex than the last. Visually and even to some extent creatively he exists somewhere between Sy Twombly and Basquiat in my opinion. See for yourself…

There are too many artists to feature here in one post, but one more honourable mention must go to Talita Hoffmann (born 1988 – Porto Alegre – Brazil) for her fascinating mixed media works, bridging the mystical, folk art and a strange off-worldly presence that somehow gives me the chills. This piece is It's A Long Way, 2008, mixed media on paper 50cm x 54cm – priced at €850.
See them all at www.rojo-magazine.com, there are plenty of original pieces, prints, some superb limited edition books and magazines featuring many of the above. If you're anywhere in the vicinity of Barcelona, Milan or São Paulo then why not get involved? Just remember to take your art mojo with you when you do.

Sepr, Epok, Sepr, Out And About
Posted: November 30th, 2009 | Author: graggregator | Filed under: Graf | No Comments »Hoorah for a break in the sodding rain this weekend, and the chance to go and get some more photos. There’s not a lot of painting going on in this weather, but Sepr’s been sticking with it.
Here’s something from him and Epok down on Albert Park Place in Montpelier, an area that’s off the beaten track for this sort of thing a bit, but is well worth checking out.
Here’s a joiner by the man himself. Click for enlargementsomeness.
That one’s a couple of weeks old now, but this one’s more recent. Three days work, constantly dodging rain showers, but it’s turned out really well for it.
Bit closer on a sentiment we can all agree with.
Secret Wars Bristol – The Result
Posted: November 30th, 2009 | Author: graggregator | Filed under: Graf | No Comments »So Secret Wars down at Blue Mountain last night. Bristol won with Andy Council monsters taking down Lorenzo’s St Stephen’s Tower, whilst the London lot took the piss out of Bristol as a place obsessed with Banksy and taking photos of graf. Touché.
The work’s top quality on both sides, but the London view of Bristol really raised a smile here certainly. What can they be trying to say about us bunch of shutterbug neeks…

Stokes Croft China And Paint Experiment
Posted: November 30th, 2009 | Author: graggregator | Filed under: Graf | No Comments »When the flyer and the email for this came around, it looked like the sort of thing that might be a bit far out of the scope of the blog, despite it being put on by the PRSC folks.
As it turned out though, the Stokes Croft China show, which opened at the PRSC shop on Jamaica Street on Friday night, is actually pretty interesting.
Chris Chalkley of PRSC’s background is in the china and pottery trade, so it’s a natural progression for Stokes Croft China to be launched, a range of china and crockery items, all printed with different things related to the graf and arty goings on around Stokes Croft.
Here’s some of what’s there.
A huge load of ‘I love’ mugs…
With some familiar names.
Lots of other mugs too with images of work from around Stokes Croft over the last few years. Here’s some Dan ones…
…and this one, one of this blog’s personal Stokes Croft favourites from the last few years.
It’s not just mugs, why not treat yourself to a new, erm, toilet?
Or perhaps a Boswell plate?
The whole show’s properly presented, in display cabinets bought from Royal Worcester when it had a closing sale from a factory no less.
Here’s the logos…
…had thought thought put into them, a crown with ‘SCC’ for Stokes Croft China above.
It’s an interesting take on the work going on round Stokes Croft, and on until Christmas Eve, so have a wander down and judge for yourself if they’re fit to use the crown.
Incidentally, next weekend, there’s another ‘paint experiement’ going on. Must be 18 months or so ago now that Jamaica Street has a load of boards on it in front of the hostel with small pieces painted by lots of different folk. There’s going to be another one on the 5th and 6th December, here’s the idea.
Boards, canvas and other surfaces of various sizes will be provided and attached to the P.R.S.C’s Jamaica Street fence in Stokes Croft. Some painting materials will also be available – though contributions will be welcome – and anyone will be free to make an artwork on the 5th and 6th of December, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
After that, the works will remain on the Jamaica Street wall until sold, and as gaps appear, new boards will go up for painting.
So, if you’re looking for somewhere for a quick paint, wander down…
Wild Dayz Book By Beezer
