Robin Beck.

Bloody awful.

Thankfully there’s someone who’s Above (boom, boom) all that.

First Love is a new print from Above, he of the arrows, which point, you guessed it, above e.g. http://bit.ly/4qsDgO.

I think this is one of those perfect presents for the missus that is actually a present for you.

Pretty bubbles in the air

All you need for love is a good blow

Until next time.

Southern Spain Graffiti – Tarifa 2009

Had a visit to the south of Spain this summer, here is some spanish graffiti I found. It was all along the back  wall to the beach at Terifa, the southernmost tip of Spain. You can see Morocco over the sea, it’s a pretty cool place.

Anyway, here are the Spain graffiti photos!

Painting Down The Bearpit – The Results

Posted: October 21st, 2009 | Author: | Filed under: Graf | No Comments »

Blogged it happening before, but didn’t get a chance to go back and get photos of the finished thing for a while. Nice big mural down in the Bearpit (St James Barton Roundabout for those abroad), proving that there might yet be hope for brightening up one of the most run down parts of the centre.

Really nice work, fits in with all the wildflowers that were planted down there a couple of years back, apparently by the council surprisingly. They’ve gone over a bit now, but should look even better next summer.

…and on the other side. Spot Stokes Croft in there.

And the credits, some names you may recognise, and perhaps not expect to be doing this sort of stuff.

Nice work. Hope it’s just the start of doing something to brighten that place up and encourage people to use it more, rather than just trying to design out people congregating there (check the individual metal seats next time you’re there. They look absurd).

More Acer Suspension Bridges For Grabs

Posted: October 21st, 2009 | Author: | Filed under: Graf | No Comments »

A quick heads up for you on this one. Following the Triple Drop show, Acer apparently had loads of inquiries about his mini Clifton Suspension Bridge canvas/print/hand finished jobbies. Or, as he calls them ‘5 colour hand-pulled screen print on high quality deep edged box canvas, black acrylic and spray paint background’. Which sounds better to be honest.

So, he’s putting together another run of them, and if you fancy your own custom one, you’ve got until the end of this month to get in touch and let him know what background colour you’d fancy it having. So, kind of a mini commission. He’s got colours like these racked up so far, but the Belton colour pallete is (probably) your oyster.

£75 a shot, which isn’t too shabby at all, given one just sold at the Get Dring Mobile auction last week for £160. So, if you’re still after one of these (christmas shopping is coming up fast for one thing) then head over here to find out more.

Incidentally, Acer also won the Second Look photography competition we mentioned recently, as voted for by real people on the internets. So if you’re one of the many that backed the winning horse on this one, then why not head down to Photographique on Baldwin Street (number 31) tonight (Wednesday) from 6:30pm to have a little drinkie and watch a beaming man collect his prize.

Shit We’re Diggin’: Chris O’Shea’s "Hand From Above"

Posted: October 21st, 2009 | Author: | Filed under: Graf | No Comments »

Hand from Above from Chris O'Shea on Vimeo.

Chris O’Shea’s Hand From Above encourages us to question our normal routine when we often find ourselves rushing from one destination to another. Inspired by Land of the Giants and Goliath, we are reminded of mythical stories by mischievously unleashing a giant hand from the BBC Big Screen. Passers by will be playfully transformed. What if humans weren’t on top of the food chain?

Unsuspecting pedestrians will be tickled, stretched, flicked or removed entirely in real-time by a giant deity.

Hand from Above is a joint co-commission between FACT: Foundation for Art & Creative Technology and Liverpool City Council for BBC Big Screen Liverpool and the Live Sites Network. It premiered during the inaugural Abandon Normal Devices Festival.”

UPDATED: DAZE, ROKE and PRIEST Peel Back History in Birmingham, Alabama

Posted: October 21st, 2009 | Author: | Filed under: Graf | No Comments »

Wes writes:

“I live in Birmingham, AL and while there is not a lot of street art we sometimes receive a gift like this. Nn 1978 a mural was painted on the side of this building and it stayed that way until a few months ago when realtors decided they wanted to rent the building. DAZE and ROKE (both bham artists), and PRIEST (of Mobile, AL) a few days ago did the piece below showing the kid peeling off the paint to once again reveal the mural underneath.”

UPDATED:

From John Morse, the photographer who shot the original photo:

“I’d like to add a bit of information to the article posted this morning about the work of DAZE, ROKE and PRIEST in Birmingham. The original mural, entitled “Geo-Chromatic Progress” was painted in 1978 by Michael Mojher, now living in Orlando, Florida. It was part of the Birmingham Mural Project, an 18-month campaign to enliven downtown walls with the cooperation of underemployed artists. The project was funded by the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act and administered by the Greater Birmingham Arts Alliance.”

Sweatshoppe – An Introduction

Posted: October 21st, 2009 | Author: | Filed under: Graf | No Comments »

SWEATSHOPPE, 4spots, the landing extras from SWEATSHOPPE on Vimeo.

“Multimedia performers Sweatshoppe have been wheat pasting buildings with moving images all over New York. Mapping video projections to LED-lit paint rollers, Sweatshoppe lay their projections on a surface, paint-stroke by paint stroke. They call new digital performance style “Video Painting”.

How it works: The software controlling the video was written in Max. The paint roller does not use any sort of paint, it simply contains green LEDs. The software tracks the color green and outputs the x y position which are sent to drawing commands and the strokes are textured with video.

Sweatshoppe is video artists Bruno Levy and Blake Shaw. They plan on eventually releasing the software, but only after it is much more refined, buffed up with features and is user-friendly.”

The Face of God?

Posted: October 21st, 2009 | Author: | Filed under: Graf | No Comments »

He’s no looker, his hair is receding, his eyebrows meet in the middle, but nevertheless there are literally 100s of people around the world that regularly dream of him, talk with him, and receive some of the wisest advice they could ever garner. I am not a religious man, I don’t purport that this is either the face of God, or as I am sure many religious fundamentalists might react, Satan, but whoever he is he’s managed to do one thing, and that is tap in to the collective psyche in a way that no other has.

The Face of God?

ThisMan.org are on a quest to find the answer, proposing a whole ream of theories to explain the phenomena, which you can read up on here. Those theories include some of my own pet faves, such as the Archetype Theory, something that those familiar with Carl Jung’s works will be well aware of, the Religious Theory, and a very intriguing Dream Surfer Theory.

Here is a quick run down on the beginning of this modern myth according to ThisMan.org -"In January 2006 in New York, the patient of a well-known psychiatrist draws the face of a man that has been repeatedly appearing in her dreams. On more than one occasion that man has given her advice on her private life. The woman swears she has never met the man in her life. That portrait lay forgotten on the psychiatrist’s desk for a few days until another patient recognizes that face and says that the man has often visited him in his dreams. He also claims he has never seen that man in his waking life. The psychiatrist decides to send the portrait to some of his colleagues that have patients with recurrent dreams. Within a few months, four patients recognize the man as a frequent presence in their own dreams. All the patients refer to him as THIS MAN."

The Face of God?

See other dream interpretations of this subconscious face for the masses here. Posters are beginning to appear all over the world asking for more witnesses, others who may have been contacted by This Man. It should be a fascinating insight into the complete lack of understanding of sleep, dreaming, and the potential of the mind to surpass a logical framework superimposed in order to maintain our race at an equilibrium of function over desire – but for one problem…

The fact is the domain ThisMan.org is registered by Italian guerilla marketing company www.guerrigliamarketing.it which more than likely means that this is probably one of the most subversive and subtle campaigns ever initiated. There’s still no clue as to why, for instance what product they may eventually promote using this ploy, it could be a vast market research program analysing gullibility, but I’d like to think that these cheeky Italians are just doing it for the kicks.

Always take life in the 21st Century with a pinch of salt, lying is the ultimate form of marketing, and it’s seeping into every walk of life, then again exaggeration and untruths are as old as mankind. At least art does it for a purer purpose, to allow us to question ourselves and the nature of reality. This Man will probably be selling you potato chips in the next few years.
