Fresh Stuff From Jerm IX

There’s something about Jerm IX’s street poems that are very powerful. We asked the artist to tell us about the two works above. Here’s the response:

“i have been affected by violence as both a victim and a perpetrator and therefore it has been a topic i speak on regularly in my street art. for example, when polish immigrant robert dziekanski was tasered to death by police at vancouver airport a few years back, i put a handful of stickers around the city that read ‘i hope you don’t get tasered’, when the ‘lower mainland’ was inundated with gang murders i put up a ‘lower gangland’ sticker, and so on. now that my work has evolved to poetry scrolls i have merged my songwriting and street art, which has allowed me to work in my favorite format, my obsession, rhyme patterns.
the dexter piece speaks for itself, we are fascinated by the things that appall us.
we vilify the monsters and killers and criminals before we give oscars to the actors that portray their stereotypes.
the ‘…america’s gun is drawn’ piece is a peaceful protest, an anti-war slogan.
the eight year anniversary of 9/11 has just past and still america is at war.
my country, canada, where the piece was put up, is at war in afghanistan, outside our traditional and respectable peace-keeping role. it’s shameful, you’d think being attacked on north american soil would teach us something about violence.
violence is not the answer.

stay smiling,

jerm IX”

New Sickboy Sculptures

Posted: October 3rd, 2009 | Author: | Filed under: Graf | No Comments »

SickboyOne of my very first articles at this blog featured Sickboy, Bristolian street art sensation with a penchant for creating temples in the corporate palette of McDonalds, although for legal purposes he probably won’t be quoted on that little gem. Personally I and my other half have always loved his resin sculptures, and if the ‘Love’ edition of his latest batch was still available we’d have forked out the wonga by now.

It comes in a limited edition batch of 25 and includes a hand silk screen printed box and is signed and numbered by the artist – as do all of the series.

 Love Temple (Resin) by Sickboy

Nevertheless you can still get yourself an original Sickboy temple from one of the other three in the series which are Peace, Happiness and Death :-

Peace Temple (Resin) by Sickboy

Happiness Temple (Resin) by Sickboy

Death Temple (Resin) by Sickboy

Each sculpture is 140mm x 120mm x 110mm and sells for £150, which when you consider most of his prints fetch £500 is a relative bargain. See them all at www.sickboy.aerosolcolours.com.

The Ones That Got Away #8

Most of Dolk’s early work, before he went bananas, is really strong and I absolutely love Burger King (although I’m a McDonalds man as far as breakfasts are concerned).

All of which is immaterial, since I failed to pick one up.

I only hope Charlie’s pain of waiting to be King is significantly less than the pain I feel every day as I look at the blank space on my wall reserved for Dolk’s finest print to date.

Catchin’ Up With Know Hope: ‘Kindred Times and Future Goodbyes’

‘Kindred Times and Future Goodbyes’ a recent event that a few friends (Foma <3, Klone and Zero Cents) and i recently put on. like the name implies, the show was in an abandoned building in south tel aviv. the location is an amazing structure that had its insides basically completely torn out, leaving only the four walls and allowing the skies to be seen through the non-existent roof and arched windows.

the building itself seems to be a somewhat historic building, and is set to be restored and preserved, but we painted in it, revisiting it and adding new pieces each visit, until we felt that it was complete.

we then decided on a date for the opening event, and opened a blog to announce the location on the day of the event, due to the fact that it was all done without permission.

i think that all in all it made for a very special night, with a lot of great people coming out, cheap wine, and bonfires to light it all up when it got darker.”… Know Hope

Shit We’re Diggin’: The Art of Tory Wright

“I explore the intersection of fashion and consumerism, using collage as a drawing tool. I collect, reclaim, and reuse Duratrans (the ever present light box advertisements) and fragrance campaign posters seen within department stores as a source material.

Employing a reductive language, I flirt with the viewer’s gaze by altering the material’s surface. By cutting away imagery pulled from luxury item advertising I reveal a new conversation with broad references to the female form. Gucci links, William Morris, art nouveau, tears and textiles intertwine as they overtake the seduction of these advertisements within a consumer culture. Ultimately commenting upon the American lust for material gratification.”… Tory Wright
