Whilst cool hunting last night (http://www.thecoolhunter.co.uk/), a guilty pleasure I wholeheartedly recommend, I stumbled across Francoise Nielly, who hails from Marseille and now lives and works in Paris. I say stumbled, her work smacked me good and proper in the face.

There are many wonderful portraits on her website, but after much deliberation, this is the one that I would buy, entitled Beautiful California, had I not spent all my wages already this month on Mighty Mo Monkey (Pink) http://bit.ly/qPWki , Kozyndan Luchador http://bit.ly/2c7Gl and Mantis iNeed http://bit.ly/SnQBo.

You however should buy, buy, buy.

On your Nielly I'd say

On your Nielly I'd say

Until next time.

More Fake Banksy Antics

Thanks to Tommy for sending this in, seems the rash of fake Banksy stuff round Bristol is continuing. This pretty odd tile was found round Old Market a couple of weeks ago. Unsurprisingly, Pest Control have confirmed it’s not by the man himself, anyone any ideas?

Painting Down The Bearpit

Posted: September 23rd, 2009 | Author: | Filed under: Graf | No Comments »

Not been able to go back and get a photo of the finished thing yet, but this was going on last weekend, some painting as part of a youth project down in the bearpit, led by the ever able Flx.

bearpit painting

At a passing glance it looks like it’s come out really well, and it’s great to see painting going on down there now, in what must be one of the most run down and depressing places in the whole of central Bristol.

The council have washed off really nice pieces from PRSC down there before now, taking the wall back to its dull and dirty former self each time. Hopefully this may be a bit of a change of heart and the place can start getting brightened up a bit.

London’s top 10 hidden art treasures By Ben Lewis, Evening Standard 13.08.09

Toasters by The Toaster Crew New North Road, N1

If you enjoy graffiti, stencils and posters, almost any walk around the East End can be a visit to an exhibition. I’m not street art’s biggest fan but I do like a slice of toast — surely Britain’s greatest contribution to world cuisine — and I think that it has been somewhat underused as a subject in contemporary art. A group of graffiti artists who style themselves the Toaster Crew have taken some steps to correct that imbalance, by spraying flying toasters all over London. My favourite is on the side of a council block in Islington. The location and scale transforms an average bit of spraying into a conceptual art work. Its context is perfect — you can imagine how much toasting goes on in the flats behind it. And it’s huge, on the scale of the super-sized sculptures of tooth-brushes and matches by pop artist Claus Von Oldenburg.

Arrested Motion Interviews Antony Micallef

Arrested Motion has a terrific interview with one of our favorite artists, Antony Micallef .

Here’s an excerpt:

AM: The faces of your subjects are often smudged, even disfigured. Are you attempting to hide part of the subject?

Ant: It’s funny because when I draw, most of the things that get destroyed are the heads. I’ll keep drawing and drawing and these things just blossom. This might sound a bit weird, but the way I visualize the piece in my head is that you see this face coming towards you from under the surface of water. I’ll probably get about 5 come up before I get the one I want. I might try and tweak them, but end up destroying them and then you have to carry on working until something else comes up.

It’s quite good to have a camera phone to take pictures of the work, but then the pictures you take aren’t hi-res. Some of the heads I’ll think are ok, I won’t need to take a picture. Then, I tweak it a little but then it’s just gone completely and changed into something else.

I don’t think it’s about trying to hide beauty, but I’m trying to find something else rather than just looking at a head. I always use my own head as the structure, but I never see them as me. I suppose a few of them when they come out might look like me and they are more like self portraits.

AM: So are you conceiving the bone structure and the skull and building the paint up from there?

Ant: Yeah, it’s like starting with a scaffolding and then I want to flesh it out. The heads have their own identities that come out during the process. They just arrive.

Read the whole interview here.

COMBO a collaborative animation by Blu and David Ellis

Posted: September 23rd, 2009 | Author: | Filed under: Graf | No Comments »

When we first heard that David Ellis and Blu were collaborating on a timelapse video we were beyond thrilled. Long before Blu did MUTO, David put together the most amazing timelapse videos we’ve ever seen with the Barnstormers.

Talking with Blu the other night, he told to us that COMBO, the video he did with David
at this year’s Fame festival would be up on YouTube this week.

And here it is…
