A Pound Of Flesh For Frankenstein

Posted: August 1st, 2009 | Author: graggregator | Filed under: Graf | No Comments »

I had a comment recently from Paul Cooper over at A Patchwork Of Flesh and was intrigued by his concept to produce a collection of interpretations on the theme of the (in)famous Mary Shelley (with a little help from Boris Karloff) character Frankenstein, or rather Frankenstein’s Monster. One is the doctor who created it, the other is the amalgamation of body parts that makes up a lumbering hulk complete with bolts to the neck, flat head, and a rather ungainly gait, although who can blame the creature, it’s been to hell and back.

I thought it might be fun to up the ante, the project is open to artists of all descriptions, kids, amateurs, pros, just about anyone who can put, pen, crayon, paint, print to paper. Whatever your medium Coop’s project might provide you with some light relief, I found it to be great fun, especially as it’s something I didn’t have to conceive as weighty or profound, it’s just a bit of fun, an emotion I have all but forgotten recently, especially since I’ve been stuck out all hours of the day in the back yard scraping rust of my damned print drying rack.

So, here’s goes, my contribution to Paul’s Frankenstein project entitled ‘Frankie Howerdstein‘.

Frankie Howerdstein by Paul Baines

Coop’s ultimate ambition is to put on an exhibition of all the works amassed at a gallery, which sounds like a lot of fun. The exhibition will come to fruition once he has a large enough collection of portraits of Frankenstein’s Monster in as many different styles and in as many different media as possible. His only stipulation is that each piece is a size of 2.5 inches by 3.5 inches (standard artist trading card size) and that each card has name, date, title and anything else you care to add on the back.

Each card will be uploaded at http://apatchworkofflesh.blogspot.com to produce an on-line gallery, each posting can include a link to your own portfolio or personal blog. Here’s a few others from the collection I’ve enjoyed.

Frankenstein’s Monster by Illustrator David Lee Ingersoll – he’s actually submitted a whole family of monsters for the project.

Coop will be leaving blank cards with instructions and mailing address in galleries, colleges, art shops, on buses, handing them out in the street and wherever else I can think of. If you would like to get involved send your Frankenstein Monster portrait to:

SIR BOBBY ROBSON RIP

In todays football era of bullshit ‘bling’ and ‘wags’ it’s worth remembering the passing of a true football legend…

“We were driving back from Birmingham when Kieron (Dyer) suddenly shouted, ‘Stop the bus! I’ve left my diamond earring in the dressing room.’ Can you imagine in my playing days a player telling Bill Shankly, ‘Stop the bus, Bill, I’ve left me earring in the dressing room.”

From Jerm IX:

“the first two lines from this piece are from a suicide note i wrote in jail at 16. i have found solace in letting go of my darkest pains on the streets in the form of poetry and for some reason this came out of me today. i am so thankful to have survived that attempt at ending it all.”

Tactical Stencil Lab is “a stencil graffiti action aimed at counteracting concerted effort by US Military to recruit in minority and poor neighborhoods.”

“We are a group of anonymous culture jammers. This action marks the start of our campaign of counteracting manipulative and exploitative propaganda aimed at the most vulnerable members of our community, through non-violent direct action.

We encourage everyone who watches this to think of a creative ways of engaging injustices in their communities. Do not be complacent, do not be indifferent…

Peace

Shit We’re Diggin’: Lvov City’s Outdoor Crossword Puzzle

Posted: August 1st, 2009 | Author: graggregator | Filed under: Graf | No Comments »

russcross.jpg

Via EnglishRussia.com comes this terrific project in Lvov City, Ukraine in which a massive crossword puzzle was painted on the side of a 100 ft high apartment building.

Questions for the puzzle can be found in various locations around the city, on monuments, theaters, fountains, etc. Each evening people meet at the building to check their answers. The way this works is that in the day time the puzzle is empty. But at night special florescent lights come on, and the answers in the puzzle become visible.
