Bits On Lower Church Lane

Posted: July 10th, 2009 | Author: | Filed under: Graf | No Comments »

There’s been some good stuff on this lane over the years, which runs off the bottom of St Michael’s Hill behind where Workshop used to be. Only bits of note at the moment are these two really.

Odd multi colour stencils of AK47’s. unsigned, possibly done by the people who live there, who knows.

Then these bits just opposite, including a Copyright rose.

Readers’ Wives Collective At Friend And Co

Posted: July 10th, 2009 | Author: | Filed under: Graf | No Comments »

Top bunch of blokes the Readers’ Wives lot, and they get themselves over to Bristol a fair bit too it seems, as you probably would if you lived in the Channel Islands.

They’re going to be back again in October at some point, for a show at the Friend and Co Gallery, which will be a series of collaborations with different people, including Zeke Clough who did the Skull Disco Records sleeves.

Here’s some shots from the recent RWC show over in Jersey for a bit of an idea if you’ve not come across them before.

Shit We’re Diggin: Agnes Varda’s 1981 Documentary "Mur murs"

Posted: July 10th, 2009 | Author: | Filed under: Graf | No Comments »

Had no idea until this week that back in 1981, the famed French film director Agnes Varda shot a documentary about all murals in Los Angeles. Here’s a clip:

A note on IMDB explains:

“The French director Agnes Varda spent a couple of different years in Los Angeles, and this particular year produced her documentary “Murs, murs” and her fiction film “Documenteur”. The title means “Walls, walls”, but also puns with the word “murmurs.” Varda located dozens of murals around LA and filmed them. Many of these are gone today, so this is a true documentary, documenting a wonderful aspect of southern Californian visual culture. She interviews the artists, a truly multicultural and multicolored group–and shows the paintings in their urban contexts. One memorable scene shows a mural at Venice Beach with young people dancing in front of it (probably near where their sons and daughters are roller skating or skateboarding now). An enjoyable movie by a European with deep aesthetic appreciation for marvelous, imaginative, colorful imagery that was considered throwaway pop culture at the time. “

ArtNet Urban Art Auction

Posted: July 10th, 2009 | Author: | Filed under: Graf | No Comments »

I’m rather excited today, yes the body is recovering, but what’s really cheered me up is that I’ve just had confirmation that my first ever article for mass publication has been accepted. It’s going to be a feature on the symbiosis of graffiti and technology entitled ‘Graffiti – The Next Generation’ in the global graffiti / lowbrow art publication Pinstriping and Kustom Graphics Magazine. It should hit the news stands in 20 countries in the next few months (August most likely) and I will be writing a full post about the issue closer to the time, but for now let’s focus on ArtNet’s Urban Art Auction

The sale will cover a massive slice of urban art history spanning from the early 1970s right up to the present day and features a plethora of big names in the genre including Shepard Fairey, Keith Haring, Warhol’s pal Jean-Michel Basquiat, Banksy (of course), and more recent works by the likes of Mr. Brainwash, Chris Johanson, Anthony Lister and Neck Face.

"We are delighted to present such a comprehensive collection of Urban and Street Art" said Hans Neuendorf, CEO of ArtNet AG. "This auction brings together seminal works by some the most influential Urban and Street artists of the past forty years.

Rather than go on and on (and on) about my personal tastes and opinions I thought I’d let the work speak for itself (for a change) ;) Although I will warn you if you’re thinking of making a bid on any of these ArtNet charge a 10% commission fee – pfft.
